The basic calculation
Freight density tells you how much shipment weight is packed into a unit of cubic volume. In U.S. freight work it is often shown as pounds per cubic foot.
Density = total shipment weight ÷ total shipment volumeWorked example
A shipment weighing 1,250 lb and occupying 82 ft³ has a density of about 15.24 lb/ft³.
What to check before using the result
Density alone does not establish a freight class or final rate. Classification can depend on additional rules and commodity characteristics.
Use the result as part of shipment preparation, then keep the final dimensions, weights and package counts consistent with the packing list, carrier instructions and other paperwork.
