What is dimensional weight?

Dimensional weight converts package volume into a weight-like value so a carrier can compare the space a package occupies with its actual weight.

What DIM divisor should I use?

Use the divisor published for the exact carrier, service and rate type you are using. Common factors include 139 in³/lb or about 5000 cm³/kg, but some services use other divisors.

Is the larger of actual and DIM weight always the final billed weight?

Not necessarily. The larger value is a useful comparison, but carriers may apply service-specific rounding, minimums, package rules, surcharges and other rating terms.

Current rule reminders: UPS publishes a 139 factor for Daily Rates and 166 for Retail Rates. FedEx publishes 139 for dimensional-weight calculations. DHL Express publishes 139 in³/lb or 5,000 cm³/kg. USPS has service- and size-specific rules; its current Priority Mail rule for rectangular parcels applies DIM pricing above 1 cubic foot (1,728 in³). Always verify the exact service before rating a shipment.

DIM weight formula

Large, light packages can be rated by the space they occupy.

Dimensional weight converts package volume into a weight-like value. Multiply length × width × height, then divide by the dimensional factor for the service you are evaluating.

DIM weight = length × width × height ÷ divisor

Example in centimeters

A 60 × 40 × 35 cm carton using a 5000 divisor has a dimensional weight of 16.8 kg. If the carton actually weighs 12 kg, the dimensional value is larger before any service-specific rounding.

Example in inches

A 20 × 16 × 12 inch carton using a 139 divisor has a dimensional weight of about 27.63 lb. Compare that with the actual package weight, then apply the carrier's current rounding and rating rules.
