Packing List Guide

What to include on a packing list and how package, weight and dimensional details support the shipment.

A packing list explains how a shipment is physically packed. It can help receiving teams, warehouses, carriers and brokers reconcile the boxes, cartons or pallets with the goods expected.

Common packing-list information

  • Shipper and consignee
  • Packing list number and date
  • Customer, invoice or purchase-order references
  • Number and type of packages
  • Description of package contents
  • Gross or net weights when needed
  • Dimensions
  • Shipping marks and handling notes

Do you include prices?

A packing list usually focuses on physical contents rather than transaction value. The commercial invoice is the document that typically carries prices and totals.

Use consistent quantities

Quantities and item descriptions should be checked against related invoices and shipment records. A reusable shipment record makes that cross-check easier.

Reminder: Shipping and export requirements vary by carrier, commodity, destination and transaction. Confirm current requirements with the responsible carrier, forwarder, broker, customer or government agency.
